The zhen - or shin (真): shape is one of the oldest chasen forms in the tea ceremony tradition, preferred by both Urasenke and Omotesenke, Japan's two leading schools. Unlike the standard chasen, where tines curl sharply into a loop at the tip, the zhen tines curve gradually from base to tip with no loop. The motion through matcha is different — smoother, with less resistance.

What makes this whisk distinct is how it's made. Each one is handcrafted from a single piece of bamboo, with a narrower handle and finer tines than a mass-produced chasen. In practice, this means the whisk sits lighter in the hand and produces a thinner, more delicate microfoam - noticeably different from what a standard chasen creates.

NB! Before first use, soak your chasen in hot water for 5 minutes. This softens the tines and opens them fully - skipping this step is the single most common reason whisks break prematurely.
