Matcha shortage in Japan - what is going on?

We know many of you have been asking why our organic premium ceremonial grade matcha is currently out of stock—and we want to be fully transparent with you.

What’s Happening in Japan?

Over the last few years, global demand for high-quality matcha has surged—especially after the pandemic, when people became more interested in natural health, mindfulness, and antioxidant-rich superfoods. Matcha took center stage in this wellness wave.

Japan, the world’s leading producer of ceremonial-grade matcha, has struggled to keep up. According to the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, matcha production nearly tripled between 2010 and 2023, reaching over 4,000 tons—and yet, demand continues to grow faster than supply.

The entire 2024 harvest was sold out before spring, leaving small businesses like ours with no possibility to restock until the new tea leaves are harvested in May.

Why the Shortage?

Matcha isn’t a mass-produced product. It comes from tencha tea leaves, which require shade-growing, hand-picking, and slow stone grinding. Each traditional stone mill produces only 40 grams per hour—enough for just 10–12 servings.

On top of that, Japan’s tea-farming population has declined by over 75% since 2000. Many farms are run by elderly tea masters, and few from the younger generation are continuing the tradition. This has created a bottleneck in both tea leaf cultivation and matcha powder production.

What This Means for Us (And You)

Because we only source certified organic, ceremonial-grade matcha directly from Japan, this shortage directly affects us—and you.

We're currently waiting on our next shipment from the fresh 2025 harvest, which is expected to arrive by the end of May. We hope to have your favorite matcha products back in stock in early June.

Until then, we appreciate your patience more than ever. 💚

A Delicious Alternative

While we wait, we still have stock of our Vanilla Matcha, made from the same premium green tea, with a touch of natural vanilla bean. It’s perfect for spring and summer, and just as high in L-theanine, antioxidants, and vibrant flavor as our original blend.

Thank You

Matcha is more than a drink—it’s a tradition, a ritual, and a connection to centuries of Japanese craftsmanship. And just like good things in life, it can’t be rushed.

We’re doing everything we can to bring you the best. Thank you for standing by us.
